The 2006 Emerald City Kickoff
Classic (ECKC) took place on Saturday, September 2, at Qwest Field,
home of the Seattle Seahawks. Excitement for the event was
high as three premier quarterbacks (Kellen Kiilsgaard,
Auburn;
Jason Munns, Southridge; Kellen Moore, Prosser) in the state were
playing that day. In addition, six of the ten participating
teams in the 2006 Emerald City Kickoff Classic were in the top five
of preseason rankings by The Seattle
Times.
The first game of the day
featured a strong running attack from class 2A Archbishop Murphy to
defeat class 2A Orting, 28-6. In game two, a balanced passing
and running game led class 4A Curtis to beat class 3A
Columbia River,
42-14. The first overtime game in ECKC history happened in
game three. Class 3A Auburn
ended the game with a 30-yard touchdown pass to beat class 4A
Moses
Lake,
20-14. Class 2A Prosser displayed an aerial assault and a 69-7
victory over class 3A Southridge in game four. The final game
was a back-and-forth battle between class 4A
Eastlake
and Punahou (Hawaii).
Tied at halftime and again heading into the final quarter, the game
was decided on a fourth quarter rushing touchdown by Punahou.
Over 8200 fans filed into Qwest Field to catch a great day of high
school football.
Based upon the success of the Emerald City
Kickoff Classic since its inception four years ago, other states and
organizers have also sponsored high school football showcases.
Continued success will rely on the future cooperation of WIAA
leagues and districts in making teams available to participate.
